What Happens When You Reassign Work from One Resource to Another
If you assign work on a project to an employee or generic resource and later want to transfer all or part of the assignment hours to another resource (for example, from a generic resource to a new employee you have just hired for the project), you can reassign them from Resource View, Project View, or the Labor tab of the Projects form. What happens when you make a reassignment depends on the options you choose in the Reassign dialog box
If You Reassign All Planned Hours for the Entire Assignment Date Range
If you reassign all planned hours for the entire assignment date range, DPS creates a new assignment for the receiving resource that is essentially a duplicate of the original assignment. The assignment start and end dates are the same, and the planned hours are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment.
- Job-to-date (JTD) hours exist for that assignment.
- The assignment was previously saved as part of the baseline plan.
If You Reassign All Planned Hours for Only Part of the Assignment Date Range
- Creates a new assignment for the receiving resource using the reassignment period dates that you specify in the Reassign dialog box as the start and end dates.
- Reassigns the planned hours that fall within the reassignment period to the receiving resource. Those hours are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment.
- Adjusts the planned hours remaining for the original assignment to reflect the reassignment.
If You Reassign Only a Portion of the Planned Hours
If you reassign less than 100 percent of the planned hours, DPS creates a new assignment for the receiving resource for the reassignment period you specify. The planned hours are spread across calendar periods exactly as they were for the original assignment, except that the number of hours for each calendar period is reduced proportionally based on the percentage you reassign.
The original assignment remains. The start and end dates are the same as before, but the number of hours for each calendar period in the reassignment period is reduced proportionally based on the percentage reassigned to the other resource.
If the Resource that Receives the Reassignment Has an Existing Assignment
If the resource to which you reassign the planned hours already has an assignment for the WBS element, the reassigned hours are added to those already assigned, and the assignment start and end dates are adjusted as necessary to span all planned hours.
What Reassignment Does Not Do
Reassignment only moves the planned hours for an assignment from one resource to another. It does not change how those planned hours are scheduled. If you also need to change how the planned hours are distributed across calendar periods, you can do that from Resource View, Project View, or the Labor tab of the Projects form after you reassign them.
