Overall Revenue Upset Limits When You Use Revenue Categories

You can use overall revenue upset limits when you use revenue categories.

When you use revenue categories to track more than one unbilled services and one uninvoiced revenue account for revenue generation, a Category field displays in the To Adjust section of the Budget & Revenue tab of the Projects hub (desktop). The revenue category that you enter in this field determines the unbilled services and uninvoiced revenue accounts to use for the adjustment if revenue exceeds the upset limit when you run revenue generation.

When you enable the revenue categories feature, the Overall Revenue/Upset Limits setting on the Budget & Revenue tab of the Projects form serves two functions, depending on the WBS levels of a project. You can:

  • Set up the overall revenue upset limits at a project's WBS level that has lower levels, to limit the revenue for the entire project (including all lower WBS levels).

For example, a project with three phases has an overall upset limit of $100,000. Individual upset limits for each of the three phases are not necessary; the $100,000 limit applies to the combined total revenue of the three phases. To set this up, enter the overall revenue upset limit at the project level and define a separate phase for the revenue adjustment. If you use revenue categories, you must specify the revenue category to which to post the adjustment when the total revenue exceeds the upset limit.

  • Set up the overall revenue upset limits at a project's lowest chargeable level, to limit the revenue for all revenue categories related to the lowest chargeable level.

To specify an aggregate limit for all revenue categories for the lowest chargeable level, select the Overall Revenue check box and select Upset Limits. Assume, for example, that you have a WBS level in which the entire WBS level has a limit of $100,000, but it does not matter what the revenue breakout is between revenue categories (labor, consultant, reimbursable). In this example, revenue generation calculates each revenue category first. If the revenue limit is exceeded for the WBS level, the revenue category to adjust will receive the adjustment.

In the Include in Limit section on the Budget & Revenue tab of the Projects form, select the items that you want to include in the limit for a WBS level: Compensation, Consultant Fee, and/or Reimbursable. Allowance. The limit applies to all revenue categories defined in Settings > Accounting > Company.

At the lowest chargeable level, the Phase and Task fields in the To Adjust section are not active.

If you use multiple companies, the upset limit options are available only at the lowest WBS level for companies that use revenue categories.

To apply a limit to a specific revenue category (Labor, Consultants, Reimbursable Allowance, Revenue Method 4, or Revenue Method 5), you must incorporate the limit in the user-defined revenue method that you create for the revenue category.
