Project Visualization Grouping Tab

Use the Grouping tab to select the grouping categories that you want to use to group data on the visualization map.

The categories that you select on this tab are available in the drop-down list for the Grouping option in the Visualization window. You can easily switch from one category to another or add multiple categories to modify the focus or structure of the map.

Drop-down list in the upper left corner of the grid Click the drop-down arrow on a grid header to complete any of the following actions:
  • To print grid data, click Print. When the Print Preview form displays, click File > Print to send the grid data to your default printer.
  • To export grid data to an Excel spreadsheet, click Export to Excel. When Microsoft Excel opens, use its features to modify, print, or email the data, or to save the spreadsheet file locally.
  • To turn on grouping for a grid, click Enable Grouping. When a field displays with the instruction: "Drag a column header here to group by that column," drag and drop column headers into this field, in the sequence that you want them to display.

Not all options are available on all grids.

Row selection column When you click in a row in the grid, the first column of the grid displays next to it to mark the currently selected grouping category.
Group

Select Group for each category by which you want to group information on the map.

You must select at least one grouping category. For example, to display metric values for projects, select Project Number, Project Short Name, or Project Long Name.

The categories you select on this tab are available in the drop-down list for the Grouping field in the Visualization window.

Use and to the left of the grid to move rows up or down in the list if you want to change the order in which Vision displays grouping categories in the drop-down list for the Grouping field.

Group By

The Group By column lists the categories by which you can group data on the visualization map.

Select Group for a category to include it in the list of grouping categories in the Visualization window.

For example, if you want to be able to generate the visualization map and then change the grouping in the Visualization window from project number to project manager number or to company, select the Group check box for Project Number, Project Manager Number, and Company.

Inner Group

If you normally want information on the visualization map for the grouping category in Group By to be grouped at a second level also, select the grouping category for that second level in Inner Group.

If you specify an inner group, you can select the two grouping categories as a single option in the Grouping field in the Visualization window. For example, suppose you always want the visualization map to group project information by project manager. To do that, you select these settings:

  • Group By: Project Manager Name

  • Inner Group: Project Short Name

The drop-down list for the Grouping field in the Visualization window displays this grouping option as Project Manager Name, Project Short Name. If you select that option, the visualization map displays a block for each project, and those projects are grouped by project manager. If you save these options as part of a set of saved options or as a favorite report, they are available each time you generate the visualization map.

However, you are not required to specify an inner group on the Grouping tab in order to use multiple grouping levels for a visualization map. If you selected Project Manager Name and Project Short Name as separate grouping options for the map rather than linking them as an outer group and inner group, you could select Project Manager Name in the Grouping field in the Visualization window and then add Project Short Name as an additional category to create the same grouping hierarchy.
