Field Description
Budget Type

Use the Budget Type option to determine how you want to plan your project — using cost amounts, billing amounts, or a combination of the two. The ability to specify the budget type allows you to compare planned amounts to the JTD, labor, expense, and consultant amounts and analyze how your plan is progressing.

When selecting the budget type, you first need to consider the type of plan you are using:
  • New plan: If you have the appropriate access rights, the Budget Type field automatically displays the default that is specified in Vision's Configuration > Planning > Plan Settings.
  • Existing plan: If you have the appropriate access rights, you can update an existing project's budget type.
Note: If you are viewing a project that does not have a plan, you cannot use Navigator's Plan Settings. See the View a Project Without a Plan online help topic for more information.

Choose from the following budget types for your plan:
  • Cost: Cost rates represent your firm's cost to produce a service. Select Cost to view your plan's amounts at cost. The Cost option displays on the Planning pages and the charts and grids and their respective amounts update accordingly. You can also select a corresponding cost rate method and cost rate table on the Labor page of Plan Settings.

The Accounting tab in Configuration > Security > Roles determines your access rights to labor costs rates and amounts in Navigator. When you select the Cost option, some information may not display because of your security access. See the Security Settings and Labor Cost Amounts online help topic for more information.

Selecting the Cost option disables the Billing Rates fields.

  • Billing: Billing rates represent the amount the client will pay for the service your firm provides. Running a plan at billing rates can be useful for discussions with the client about the progress and outcomes of the project. This option is available if billing rates are enabled in Vision. Select billing to view your plan's amounts at billing. The Billing option displays on the Planning pages and the charts and grids and their respective amounts update accordingly. You can also specify a corresponding rate method and rate table on the Labor page of Plan Settings.

Selecting the Billing option disables the Overhead % field.

  • Cost and Billing: Select this option to enable both cost and billing rates for the plan. You can also specify the corresponding rate methods and tables on the Labor Plan Settings dialog box. When you select Cost and Billing as the budget type, Navigator includes Cost and Billing options on the Planning pages. Use these options to switch between viewing cost amounts and billing amounts on the Planning charts and grids. See the Switch Expense Amounts from Billing to Cost online help topic for more information.

After you select the Budget Type, the respective rates are enabled for your plan and the Cost and/or Billing options display on the Dashboard and Planning tabs. Use these options, or switch between them, to view your plan at cost and/or billing.

Calendar Scale Use this field to determine the calendar periods planned labor is spread into. If the scale is changed, any existing planned hours will be re-spread across the new periods.
