Company Variable 20: Earned Holiday Calculation Method

Use this Company Variable to set the calculation method for employees' earned holidays.

Public holidays and country-specific holidays can be added to your WorkBook system via Settings > Holidays and absence > Holiday calendars tab.

Most companies have a standard holiday calendar for employees. However, some employees may require a different set of holidays depending on their geographic location. By default, employees are associated with their company's holiday calendar, but it is possible to choose a different calendar via the Employee card > Settings > Employee basic setting > Holiday calendar drop-down menu.

You can select one of the following options for this setting:
  • 0 - Do not reduce
  • 1 - Reduce based on number of remaining months
  • 2 - Reduce based on number of remaining days (including off days)
  • 3 - Reduce based on number of remaining work days
  • 4 - Use Danish holiday rules
  • 5 - Holiday accrual calculation

The default value is 0 - Do not reduce.

Danish Holiday Rules

The option 4 - Use Danish Holiday Rules supports the Danish holiday rules that took effect on September 1, 2020. This changed the way employees who are subject to Danish holiday rules earn and spend their holiday hours.

The Danish Holiday rules always base calculations on 25 holidays for an entire year regardless of the period-specific amount of vacation days.

After September 1, 2020, at the beginning of each new vacation year, employees subject to the Danish holiday rules start at zero (0) earned days, rather than receive a fixed 25 days. They also earn and spend their vacation hours for that year concurrently. This means that employees who are hired in the middle of a vacation year do not have to wait until the next vacation year before they can use earned vacation hours; they can use the vacation hours that they earn within that same vacation year.

In addition, the Danish Holiday Act requires that employees use their earned vacation hours for four months after a vacation year has ended. This means that within the first four months of a vacation year, employees’ total remaining earned holiday hours are actually the remaining hours of the current year plus the remaining hours from the previous year.
